What is Baptism?
An Act of Renewal
Baptism is an exciting act of obedience and symbol of transformation in the life of anyone who has placed their faith in Jesus. It involves being completely immersed in water to signify the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus, and to celebrate the gift of new life within the new Christian. The full immersion underwater represents death to our old life of sin and the rising out of water symbolizes the victory of a transformed life walking with Christ.
A Symbol of Change
Baptism is not salvation itself and the baptismal waters do not hold any special cleansing powers for sin. The only cleansing power for sin is the blood of Jesus Christ that was shed on the cross. Jesus gave his life on the cross as a substitute for all human sin. He took the penalty we deserve. Faith in Jesus is the only way to forgiveness, freedom, and a forever relationship with God. You cannot earn salvation through the act of baptism. Rather, baptism comes after one has entrusted their life to Jesus Christ and accepted Him as their personal Lord and Savior.
Who should be baptized?
At Brainerd Hills we believe baptism is only for professing believers and, therefore, do not practice infant baptism. Baptism comes after an individual knowingly makes a decision to personally trust Jesus. While we understand the intentions behind infant baptism are good in nature, this purposeful decision simply cannot be made by an infant.
Have you trusted your life to Jesus? God knows you are sinful and Jesus died to save you? Have you said "yes" to a life transformed by his love? Jesus calls us to immediate action. Reach out today to take that step. And, if you have already trusted Christ, then follow his example and be baptized. You won't regret it.
